Innovating Education: How Germany’s oldest Distance Learning University makes it work
Dr. Hutgens delved into the fascinating evolution of FernUniversität in Hagen, Germany’s pioneering state-funded distance education university which is the largest by student enrollment. The FernUniversität’s flexible degree programs and continuing education offerings ensure that higher education is accessible to individuals from diverse backgrounds. The university comprises five faculties that engage in a broad spectrum of theoretical and applied research across the fields of Humanities and Social Sciences, Psychology, Mathematics and Computer Science, Economics and Business Administration, and Law.
In addition to highlighting the innovative initiatives at the Centre for Learning and Innovation (CLI), she explored the university’s distinctive position within Germany’s higher education framework, while also addressing the challenges it faces and the valuable lessons it holds for the future.
This interaction not only highlighted the relevance of distance learning in today’s educational landscape but also encouraged a rich exchange of ideas and perspectives among participants. The participants agreed at the end that there was need to strengthen international networks, and this was a good first step towards that direction.
