    In this Portrait of the Month, we introduce you to Deng Bulis Bartalam, who fled South Sudan when war broke out in his country and had been living in Ethiopia since September 2011. Deng Bulis is now a DAAD In-Country / In-Region Scholar pursuing a Master’s program in Public Health at Mount Kenya University in Thika Town, Kenya.

  • DAAD Regional Office presents funding opportunities at Mount Kenya University

    At the invitation of Mount Kenya University (MKU), the DAAD Regional Office for Africa presented “Study and Research in Germany” on May 20, 2022 and introduced the DAAD funding opportunities and scholarships on the topic “The Role of Universities, the Public and Private sectors in Peace building for Socio-economic Development”. The DAAD presented an information booth and participated in the panel discussion during the 2nd Conference “Peace, Security and Social Enterprise.”

  • DAAD Nairobi Office Welcomes 21 New Ph.D. Scholars from East Africa to Germany

    Twenty-one new DAAD-scholarship holders from Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania have the chance to continue their academic careers with a full Ph.D. programme or a year of study in Germany. They have successfully applied to the DAAD, gone through a multi-stage selection process, and are now preparing for their departure.

  • Questions to the Centers of Excellence funded by the DAAD with funds from the Federal Foreign Office

    By establishing centers of excellence, the DAAD supports African universities in improving their educational quality and expanding their research capacities to enable the education of future decision-makers in Africa according to international standards. The DAAD’s Centres of African Excellence program aims to create internationally competitive centers on a sustainable basis, thereby contributing in a publicly visible way to improving the functioning of socially relevant sectors in African countries.

  • Delegation of the Kenyan Ministry of Education gets information about DAAD opportunities

    In March, the Kenyan Ministry of Education and DAAD Nairobi agreed to intensify their exchange and cooperation. A first working-level meeting took place, and a delegation of six programme officers from the ministry visited the DAAD office. They learned about DAAD funding opportunities for and with Kenya.

    We got a chance to interview successful recipients of the Leadership for Africa Scholarship Programme, one male Kenyan citizen, Peter Diang’a, now studying in Osnabrück, Germany, and two female refugees, Luwam Tesfai from Eritrea who was living in Ethiopia at the time of application and now studying in Berlin,  and Fardowsa Muhamud, from Somalia who studied in Uganda and is now pursuing her master’s in Magdeburg.

  • Mining and Resource Management at CEMEREM, Taita Taveta University – Kenya

    In Kenya, the DAAD supports two “Centers of African Excellence,” one being the “Kenyan German Center for Mining, Environmental Engineering and Resource Management” (CEMEREM) at the Taita Taveta University. CEMEREM is a joint project of the Dresden University of Applied Sciences and the Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg.
