Application Requirements

A letter of motivation is required when you apply for a study scholarship. This letter gives you the opportunity to let us know more about yourself and the reasons why you are applying for DAAD funding. The following information and questions will help you write an informative letter of motivation, which should be no more than three pages long.

  • Facts about your education, skills, and knowledge
    • Studies: study programme, number of semesters if applicable, degree
    • Professional experience, if applicable
    • Specialised knowledge, skills, and language skills
    • Prizes and awards (if applicable)
  • Academic motivation
    • Why do you wish to take the study programme for which you are applying?
    • What appeals to you about your chosen university?
    • What are your expectations for attending the course (personal, professional, for your career)?
  • Reasons for applying for a scholarship
    • Why are you applying for a DAAD scholarship?
    • What do you expect of this scholarship?
    • How will the scholarship help you achieve your academic, professional, and personal goals?
  • Personal interests
    • Here you can outline special extracurricular achievements and commitments or personal qualities that say something about your character.

No, there is no template for writing the letter of motivation. How the content of the letter is presented is up to each applicant.

English is the primary language of instruction for the scholarship programmes.

Review the Call for Scholarship Application document for the programme you are interested in to see the documents required for the DAAD scholarship application. All required documents must be provided with the application document during submission on the DAAD Portal.

IMPORTANT: The University may require additional documents! Confirm with the specific university/institution.

Your academic documents are mandatory documents required for your scholarship application. If you have all your official transcripts including the final graduating grade, and you are sure your degree certificate will be issued no more than two months after the application deadline, you can submit your scholarship application accordingly. You will need to upload the degree certificate as soon as you get it before the final selection, or your application will be incomplete.

If you do not have the final transcripts and your official degree certificate, your application will be incomplete and therefore unsuccessful.

Some universities/institutions may provide you with a pre-admission letter and/or a letter that confirms that supervisors will be assigned to you at a later stage while others may have a different approach.

Reach out to the contact person at the university/institution you are interested in to get more information on the application requirements and procedures.

Check with the university/institution you are interested in on whether your university degree certificates are recognized in the host country.

You may also confirm with the recognition, evaluation or equation of qualifications authority in the host country. For example, the Commission for University Education (CUE) in Kenya, the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) or the Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU) among others.

Applicants must send their admission application documents to the institution using the contacts and the procedure that is prescribed by the institution.

Applications sent to the DAAD Nairobi office will not be forwarded to the institutions and will not be considered for a scholarship.

The DAAD application form is a system generated form which can only be accessed through the DAAD portal using the DAAD portal link for the individual programmes listed. Once filled, applicants must submit their application via the DAAD portal by the scholarship application deadline.

For the institution applications, follow the application modalities of the institution you are interested in. Any DAAD scholarship application not submitted via the DAAD portal will not be considered for a scholarship.

Confirm with the contact person at the university/institution you are interested in on the country regulations on visa, recognition of degree certificate and other admission-related queries.

No, that is not necessary. While you are required to apply for the university/institution admission and the DAAD scholarship at the same time, you will have until the final selection of scholarship holders to submit the admission letter.

The deadline for each call for scholarship applications is available on the main In-Country/In-Region webpage. Each institution will have their own deadlines that you would need to adhere to when applying for admission.

No, this is not possible. If the deadlines for both the DAAD and the university have passed, you will need to wait for the next call for applications.

Technical Support

Check the DAAD Manual for Personal Funding that will give you step-by-step on how to use the DAAD Portal to apply for the scholarship. The instructions include how to register and submit an application, as well as how to submit additional support documentation.

Please remember that applications can only submitted when a call for applications goes out.

Please get in touch with us via email icir.nairobi@daad.de or phone +254 733 465 720.

For any problems with the online application process on the DAAD portal, please contact portal@daad.de.

Scholarship Selection

After the call for application deadline, DAAD will conduct formal check of scholarship applications and supported documents submitted via the DAAD portal. Host institutions will check admission applications submitted to them. Only complete and shortlisted applications to DAAD and host institutions will be reviewed during the final selections.

While host institutions may conduct interviews with applicants for their admission application, DAAD does not currently conduct interviews for the scholarship applications at the Master level. Postgraduate applications may include a scholarship interview with DAAD, which will be communicated to PhD applicants when it is included.

You will be informed by the university/institution that you applied for about the outcome or status of your admission application.

DAAD will inform all scholarship applicants of the outcome of their scholarship applications by July. Applicants will need to log into the DAAD portal to review the letter indicating the results of their application.
