Basic Application Conditions

No, if you meet all the formal requirements you can apply. But please note that your last academic degree must not be older than six (6) years at time of application.

No, unfortunately you cannot apply for this very programme.

Courses of Study – Degrees Offered

In general, “Leadership for Africa” offers scholarships for Master studies in Germany to qualified applicants in all fields of study except for Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Dentistry, Law, Arts and Architecture. All “Leadership for Africa” scholarship holders benefit from a complementary training programme in good governance, civil society and career development. The mandatory programme must be completed in addition to the regular studies.

No, unfortunately, fine arts and music are excluded due to the very restrictive admission policy. For applicants from artistic disciplines and the field of architecture, the DAAD offers subject-specific scholarship programmes (see separate DAAD scholarship offers in the scholarship database www.funding-guide.de).

Unfortunately, the DAAD cannot offer a scholarship for the study of medicine (including dentistry and veterinary medicine). We do regret this very much, but due to the special admission procedure and the length of study and to certain legal aspects involved (in case of specialized training), the field of medicine is excluded. Please do not send any requests for exceptions as they will not be recognized. With a Degree in Medicine, you can apply for Public Health or Biomedical Master related programmes only. A Master programme in Medicine is not eligible for funding.

For the scholarship application, a bachelor’s degree of at least 2nd class upper division level is also required together with the complete university transcripts. To be admitted into a master’s Programme in Germany, you need your bachelor’s certificate and transcripts at the time of university registration in Germany.

Language Requirements

For your DAAD scholarship application, you may submit any official document that can prove your proficiency in the English language. It does not necessarily have to be a TOEFL or IELTS score, it could also be a letter from your university or Ministry stating that the language of instruction of your university studies was English and this is sufficient to complete the DAAD scholarship application only.

For your university applications, please note that universities in Germany may require you to provide an IELTS or TOEFEL certificate even if the language of instruction of your university studies was English. In this case, you have no other option than to provide the required language certificate at the latest upon admission.

Some universities may accept a letter from your university or Ministry stating that you studied in English. To be sure about the university language requirement, please visit the website of the universities you wish to apply to and read about their application requirements.

If you are not comfortable communicating in English or your TOEFL/IELTS scores are not good enough, then chances for obtaining the scholarship are very low. We recommend that you work on your English skills and apply for a DAAD scholarship next year.

No, you do not need to know German in order to apply. You can apply if you consider a degree course in English language. A basic knowledge of German is helpful but not necessary. The scholarship programme itself will offer German Language courses before your first semester at the German university begins. If you chose a study programme in English, you only need to prove your knowledge of the English language.

If the study course you choose is in German and you can hand in proof of sufficient knowledge of the German language (e.g. DSH, TestDaF or any certificate from the Goethe-Institute), you may apply even with a low proficiency in English. Please be aware that the additional mandatory LEAD training programme is taught in English.

Yes, pre-selected candidates will be invited to an online interview with an independent selection committee of university professors.

You will be given a time slot in which you will have to take part in an online interview. Please be on time, otherwise you may be excluded. A committee of German professors will interview you and ask you questions about your CV, your previous academic work and your study plans in Germany. Some questions will be academic questions, making sure that you have the necessary qualifications for studying in Germany. Other questions will be related to your motivation, intercultural qualifications and to your plans for the future. Please note: All interviews will be conducted in English or German!
